Welcome to our very first poetry club! We are so excited to have you here!

This poetry club will look into the Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish (1941-2008).

Darwish won various awards for his poetry and wrote the Palestinian Declaration of Independence, which was the formal declaration for the creation of the State of Palestine.

The poems we will look at are: I Come From There, Identity Card and A Lover From Palestine.

This week, we'll look at the poetry of Benjamin Zephaniah, renowned poet who sadly passed in 2023. Zephaniah was included in The Times list of Britain's top 50 post-war writers. His work examined his lived experiences of incarceration, racism and his Jamaican heritage.

The poems we will look at are: Talking Turkeys!, We Refugees and Fair Play.

This session will look at Ukrainian poet Lesya Ukrainka (1871-1913).

Ukrainka was not only a poet but also a playwright and political thinker. She wrote in Ukrainian during a time when the language and culture were heavily repressed under the Russian Empire. Despite suffering from tuberculosis her entire life, she produced some of the most stirring, defiant, and emotionally rich works in Ukrainian literature.

The poems we will look at are: Contra Spem Spero!, and A Former Spring.

(not so) frequently asked questions (but we feel you should know)

How do I sign up?

Well I'm happy you asked!

Each meet has a link to sign up. You will be emailed with the relevant details, so make sure you put the right email!

If you prefer, you can join our WhatsApp group chat. No spam promised - we'll only text what we put in our emails.

Do I have to attend all of the meets?

Haha of course not

You can attend whichever club you like. The poet for each week is always listed, so if you don't fancy it, don't force yourself!

What if I didn't read the poems, or even like them?

Come anyway! You can just sit and eat popcorn whilst you listen :P

We're not aiming to analyse each poem like you would at GCSE, rather talk about the poet, what they stand for, and any prominent themes which arise in the poems.

How long will it last?

One magnificent hour
